The "Welcoming Congregation" |
| |  | | | program was developed by | the Unitarian Universaliist Association in 1989 as a way of lessening the negative attitudes and ignorance about bisexual, gay, lesbian and transgender people that resulted in their exclusion from many churches.
Since that time, many other churches have adopted the term "Welcoming Congregation" as a way to say that they too welcome folks regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identification.
