Mountain Light was conceived in 1998 to provide a place of meeting and worship for religiously liberal folks in north-central Georgia. We received technical, moral and financial support from Georgia Mountains UUC in Dahlonega and from the Unitarian Universalist Association in Boston and its Mid-South District in Oxford, Mississippi and became formally affiliated with the UUA as a Member Congregation in May, 2000.

We believe that spiritual knowledge
is ever-changing and always evolving. Our understanding of the universe, and all of its mysteries, is never final.
We seek to understand the continuum of revelation by listening to the wisdom of teachers, prophets and sages--past and present. And then testing our insights in, and with, our hearts and minds.
We encourage members to think for themselves, so we enjoy sharing our thoughts and beliefs, even when they differ. Maintaining the ability to laugh, with each other, and at ourselves, helps us do that.
We strive to be a positive moral presence in our communities and the larger world. We want our relationships with one another, with other peoples, and with our planet to be informed by justice, equity and compassion.

As a member of the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations
our members affirm and promote the following Seven Principles:
+ The inherent worth and dignity of every person. + Justice, equity, and compassion in human relations. + Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth. + A free and responsible search for truth and meaning. + The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and society at large. + The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all. + Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.
Unlike a creed, The Seven Principles are a living document that UUA revisits regularly, and revises from time to time. You can learn more about Unitarian Universalism by visiting the About Unitarian Universalism link above and on the left.

In addition to the Seven Principles, at Mountain Light
members make a Covenant with each other to: Promise to promote the welfare of our congregation as a unified community through: + Accepting and respecting the diversity of all individuals; + Committing our support with time, talent, and treasure; + Having realistic expectations of each other and supporting one another with kindness; + Providing an exceptional home for spiritual growth; + Communicating mindfully, listening and speaking with compassion, and always assuming goodwill; + Looking for and creating opportunities to have fun and share the gift of laughter; + Staying together in community through good times and bad; + Ministering to each other in times of need, and + Being ever aware that within the greater community we are all representatives of Mountain Light and Unitarian Universalist ideals. We pledge to honor our covenant with a guiding principle of love and forgiveness to ourselves and others in our efforts to uphold these ideals.
Like the Principles, our Covenant is a living document, not creed or dogma set in stone.
