Disturbing News From Former Soviet Bloc Countries

News media outlets in the United States reported recently the surge in racial attacks in the Russian Federation mainly in large urban areas by groups of skinheads on racial minorities, including but not limited to a small number of Africans living in Russian cities. Many of them are students from abroad.

According to reports, the Russian government isn't addressing the issue of racial hatred. Even though there are hate laws on the books they are not enforced. Police are reportedly telling victims that they cannot be protected and in some cases have allegedly tried to take bribes or protection racket monies from the victims who report the crimes.
MLUUC and other UU groups can make a difference.

Think of the heritage we have as UU's in regards to civil rights not only in the United States - but also in using our voices to influence situations in South Africa and elsewhere.

It's time that we spoke up about Russia.

-Urge those at the Russian Embassy to address the issue at a national level in the Russian Federation.(202) 939-8907 - Russian Embassy 2641 Tunlaw Road NW, Washington, DC 20007

-Urge your elected officials to send a clear message to the Russian government about civil rights and what is expected on the global level of a modern free government. To locate your elected officials go to UUSC and follow the links to CapWiz.

-Look for upcoming petitions and other materials from mluuc social justice chair about this situation.

It's critical that we make our voices heard on this issue. The fact that this is happening in Russia means little in our shrinking world.. But, what is there today springs up again soon here!

Say NYET To Russian Racism.........

Sincerely,

Craig O'Manion
