2012 January 01   New Year's Day

Gary Kaupman

"New Year's Feast"

We will have a short service then celebrate the New Year's with a traditional Southern meal, prepared by our host, Gary Kaupman.

Service Leader: Gary Kaupman; Music: Richard Wilson (piano).

2012 January 08

Karen Boyer, Laura Burton, and Janet Dunsmore "Our Church Narratives"

This week we continue to weave and share our Spiritual Narratives as three more members share their formative church stories. RE: We will talk about symbols, what they are and why we have them, including the symbol of our faith, the flaming chalice and why it is special to us.

Service Leader: Kasey; Music: Richard Wilson (piano). Youth Sunday.

Note: Congregational meeting after the service to update where we are in the new home search.

2012 January 15

Rev. Dr. Edward Frost "Is Nothing Sacred?"

It is a version of "throwing the baby out with the bathwater". Religious humanists, agnostics, atheists toss out outworn (so we say) concepts of "God" and with them – to our detriment – tend to toss out all sense of the sacred and the spiritual. Dr. Frost believes that the sacred exists in the world and that we enrich our lives by embracing it.

Service Leader: David Johnson; Music: Richard Wilson (piano).

2012 January 22

Donna Waddell "Regrets of the Dying"

Based on the book

Regrets of the Dying

, Donna will explore and discuss each regret. Hopefully, drawing on her experience as a nurse and recent experience of being with Jean Tyson at her deathbed, Donna can bring us some enlightenment based on what it is like to die. The "takeaway" from the service will be to die without any regrets.

Service Leader: Donna Waddell; Music: Richard Wilson (piano).

2012 January 29

Rev. Heather Collins "Gross Congregational Happiness"

This sermon will have to do with the ways that Mountain Light and UUism contribute to (or diminish) happiness in the sense of peace and joy and contentment. The sermon's illustrations will largely be focused on the tiny country of Bhutan, which was featured on a PBS documentary about their transition from a monarchy to a more democratic system of governance with a constitution.

Service Leader: Donna Waddell; Music: Richard Wilson (piano) & David Bowen (guitar). Potluck.

Note: Break down room (Saturday wedding).

Amin Tomeh "The Similarities Between Islam and UU's Principles"

What most of us know about Islam comes from the mainstream media, and much of that coverage is based on conflict and crisis. To correct any misinformation about Islam and to help us better understand Islamic beliefs and practices, Amin Tomeh, of the Islamic Speakers Bureau (ISB) will share with us those Islamic concepts which reverberate with the Seven Principles of the UUA. Instead of comparing and contrasting our faiths, this program will reveal our similarities, helping to promote understanding and facilitating interaction between us and our Muslim-American neighbors. RE: Youth Sunday activities on Feb 05 will complement the adult program as we compare the beliefs of the Islamic religion with our own U.U. principles and beliefs. We'll examine the similarities and differences of these two faiths with discussion and a game. There will also be a fun game with oranges (yes, oranges!) from the Tapestry of Faith curriculum with which we'll explore the differences we see in others in our day to day life. For more information or questions about Youth Sunday activities please contact Kathy Romanick.

Service Leader: Kasey; Music: Richard Wilson (piano). Youth Sunday.

Room must be set up before service (Saturday wedding).

2012 February 12

Rev. Dr. Scott Dillard "The Love Sermon"

Today we look at the topic of love and how we recognize it and manifest it in the world. It isn't always what we think it is, and we often time overlook it. So, today we contemplate how to more fully connect with the love in our lives.

Service Leader: Kasey; Music: Richard Wilson (piano).

2012 February 19

Rev. Dr. Edward Frost "Living the Full Catastrophe"

The "full catastrophe" (as Zorba called it), the pain of birth, the pain of death, a little time upon the stage only to shuffle off san everything – all this can be endured if, as some say, we deserve it or if, perhaps, it means something and/or serves some great cosmic purpose beyond our comprehension. But what if it doesn't? What if all the disasters and accumulating battering of daily life don't mean a thing? Many people – perhaps most people – can not bear that possibility. How can we live with "the full catastrophe?

Service Leader: Carol Johnson; Music: Richard Wilson (piano).

Break down room after service (event on 24th).

2012 February 26

Karen Boyer "What We Do with Our Lives: Work, Volunteer, Leisure"

This service, our last at the Pavilion, is part of the Most Challenging Principle series. Karen will examine two: the inherent worth and dignity of every person, and Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.

Service Leader: Donna Waddell; Music: a Capella.

Set up room before service (event on 24th). Service Leader Traing Class after service.

Move to 2502 Tails Creek Road

2012 March 11

DST begins

Cindy Brown "The Light in Our Life and Our Photographs"

Cindy Brown will share comparisons between what she has learned about light in photographs and what she has learned about light in her life. She will draw on various faith traditions for enlightenment.

Service Leader: Carol Johnson.

Note: This will be our first service at the Tails Creek location.

2012 March 18

Rev. Heather Collins "If not Tyrants"

As UUs we covenant to affirm and promote the principles of our chosen faith. Many leaders who helped shape the world as we know it were cradled by this faith we share and directed by these same principles even if expressed differently through the ages. Let us explore together ideas of leadership and those qualities that help us move forward from having a thought to taking action. If not a tyrant, what sort of leader would you be... and follow?

Service Leader: Terry Woehr; Music: Richard Wilson (piano). There will be a Congregational Meeting after the service. The purpose of this meeting is to prepare and finalize a slate of officers to serve on the 2012-2013 MLUUC Board of Directors. This slate of nominated officers will be voted on by MLUUC members at the church Annual Meeting scheduled to be held on 2012 May 20.
